De La Soul announce return

new album

The influential New York hip-hop have announced their newest project, which will debut next week.

De La Soul have not released an album since their 2004 release The Grind Date. After pretty much staying under the radar since then, aside from a few appearances with other musicians, the NY natives have revealed that they will be releasing a new single each month, beginning next week with the first single Get Away.

Get Away is a track inspired by the somewhat “redundant” nature of contemporary hip-hop, how rappers are all about making money and almost totally lacking in any substance to their music.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, rapper Maseo commented that he “think[s] it’s a great record to reintroduce ourselves with, it’s pretty much reflecting on the state of Hip-Hop at this moment. Everything is redundant. Everything sounds the same. No real lyrical content. Everybody’s just doing business, not really creating.”

Get Away is also set to be a celebration of De La Soul’s 25th anniversary since their formation back in 1998 in Long Island, New York.

The nine singles set for monthly release will be made available on iTunes, but primarily throughout the social networks, like Facebook and Youtube.

And after these have all been released, we can finally expect to see the bands eighth album, titled You’re Welcome.

When asked about why release nine singles instead of one full album, Maseo commented

“I think putting out those singles would be more impressionable than dropping an album at this present day in music,” With a single a month coming out from them I think we can withstand to wait for the album a little longer, and either way we can not wait for them to release their new stuff.”
