Steve Collins v Roy Jones Jr. bout will not now go ahead

Collins AmendedHaving sensationally announced his return to the ring to face Roy Jones Jr., Steve Collins will not now take on his arch-rival in what had been planned to be a June bout.

Back in January, the Dubliner told Richard Keys and Andy Gray on Talksport Radio that he would finally “get it on” with his long time enemy.  With Collins and Jones often having verbally sparred, particularly when at their boxing peak in the 1990s, it seemed as though this time was the real deal.

Collins had however not fought in over 14 years while at 44 years-old, Jones Jr. is four years’ Collins’ junior and had fought in the ring some eight months ago.

Roddy Collins, Steve’s less famous but no less outspoken brother, has told The Irish Examiner this week:   ”No, no, that’s never going to happen, that’s off.  Yeah, they did talk and maybe it was a possibility briefly. After all, it was all that was left for Steve and it’s in his blood to fight and he had always wanted that shot.”

The news will come as a relief to the majority of those who care for the well being of the former Super Middeweight World Champion.  While Jones Jr. has not covered himself in glory in the recent past, having fought five times over the last four years and losing three times (twice by knock-out), he is by some distance the fresher, stronger and fitter man at this stage of both men’s lives.

Sanctioning bodies in Britain, Ireland and the United States had reportedly been reluctant to give their approval to the bout, though jurisdictions such as Luxembourg (who sanctioned last summer’s infamous David Haye -v- Derrick Chisora charade) would likely have been interested.  Thankfully however it appears as though Steve Collins will now remain in retirement from boxing and a likely bad beating from the man who deserved to win a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games (and would have but for one of the most outrageous “decisions” in boxing history) will not now happen.
